Homework
Reading
In Year 5 children are assessed at their reading level in the following areas:

The more you read at home the more confident and fluent reader your child will be! The more children can talk about their reading, the more they will understand what they have read. You could use these questions to help you discuss the texts with your child/
Reading Stars – our whole school reading competition. If your child reads 3 times a week and records this in their reading record – they are a reading star! We will be competing to be the best year group at reading at home.
Bug Club - All children have access to Bug Club at home where they can read online and answer questions. If you have trouble logging in please email your class teacher.
- Visit the website www.activelearnprimary.co.uk (Make sure you have flash player downloaded) or download the App ‘Puffin Academy’ then click ‘Puffin Portal’ . Next, click the search bar and type ‘bug club.’ Afterwards, scroll down to the bug club logo and click ‘launch’

Homework Takeaway Menu
We can’t wait to see the brilliant homework you produce and send in via Portfolios on Class Dojo!
Each half-term we will upload the takeaway homework menu to Class Dojo and this webpage. If children complete their homework please upload this to their portfolio on Class Dojo. Click here for a useful video from Class Dojo’s YouTube channel if you are unsure how to post to your child’s portfolio.
The homework menu has a chilli rating which suggests the difficulty or challenge the homework may offer. Every half term you should attempt at least one ‘flaming hot’ task!
Spellings
Every Friday your child will be set spellings on Class Dojo. Please take the time to help them learn their new spellings. Children are expected to include these correct spellings in the learning at school.
Ideas to support with spelling at home:
- Create a set of flashcards with your child’s spellings (and the definition of the word on it for more-able children)
- Play ‘Spelling Memory’ – say the word, child spells the word
- Use alphabet magnets or scrabble ties to spell out each word
- Write sentences for each word
- Type the spelling words onto a computer or tablet
- Write or type a story using the spelling words
- Use the ‘Spelling city’ website http://www.spellingcity.com/index.php?option=com_route&route=newuserregistrationform (cannot be used on a tablet) – you can type in your spelling words, it helps you to learn them and then tests the spellings taught
- Create a crossword with your child’s spelling using http://www.discoveryeducation.com/free-puzzlemaker
- Let your child spell their spelling words with their alphabet cereal or trace it into mashed potato with a fork!
- Use old magazines/newspapers to find the spelling words - How many times can you find the word in the newspaper?
- Play Spell Bound https://gridclub.com/activities/spellbound
